God's soverignty, calvinism, etc

I know I just posted a link to this blog recently, but I wanted to point out this recent post specifically since it partially outlines my beliefs in how salvation is brought about. There are some good comments that follow.

Another article that I think is worth linking (and related to the blog post) -- but I don't expect you to read it all at once, because I have only managed to plow through a little of it myself (second 1 to be exact) -- is an article about the "points" of Calvinism. You might hear someone say that they are a 5 point (or 4 point) Calvinist. This article breaks it down into what each of the points are. It isn't easy reading. For the first section I wrote up an outline for myself to review later on since it was so dense. Let me know if you are interested in it.

  1. I started reading it and I like it so far... well written!

The author (Dabney) and Scott think alike:
"We Presbyterians care very little about the name Calvinism. We are not ashamed of it; but we are not bound to it. Some opponents seem to harbor the ridiculous notion that this set of doctrines was the new invention of the Frenchman John Calvin. They would represent us as in this thing followers of him instead of followers of the Bible. This is a stupid historical error. John Calvin no more invented these doctrines than he invented this world which God had created six thousand years before. We believe that he was a very gifted, learned, and, in the main, godly man, who still had his faults. He found substantially this system of doctrines just where we find them, in the faithful study of the Bible, Where we see them taught by all the prophets, apostles, and the Messiah himself, from Genesis to Revelation."

Ok, other than the part where he identifies himself with a denomination...

  2. I noticed that too, Kim. I also started to read it and thought the same thing, silly labels! It’s incredibly long, but I look forward to reading the rest of it, I just wish I had a hard copy, I hate reading off a screen!
